Phil Mellanby, one of three winners of this year’s ACAVA Studios Artist Development Prize, is our current artist-in-residence at ACAVA Spode Works Studios.

Phil’s residency will run between 23 November and 22 December 2022 and will offer him a platform to collaborate with the Spode Works Studios’ community to collectively select, curate and install an exhibition of his work in the studios’ exhibition space – the show opens on Thursday 15 December 2022.

** Update: Due to unforeseeable reasons Phil’s residency has been postponed until February/March 2023. Please watch our social media and website for news about our next artist-in-residence Mark Lippett, due to start his residency in January **

In partnership with Keele University and this year’s Three Counties Open Art Exhibition, the three winning artists of the ACAVA Studios Artist Development Prize will each benefit from a one-month-long residency at our studios in Stoke-on-Trent.

The ACAVA Studios Artist Development Prize is a career development opportunity that supports artists with the use of a studio for four weeks each to explore, expand, and develop their practice within a thriving community of established artists and creatives at ACAVA Spode Works Studios. Learn more about the prize here.

The residencies will offer professional development opportunities in the form of public engagement, and co-creation of public-facing outcomes such as artist talks, exhibitions, group crits and artist workshops.

The three winning artists were selected from a pool of 43 entries for the prize, among 120 successful entries to the Three Counties Open Art Exhibition at Keele University.

Phil Mellanby won the ACAVA Studio Holders Choice with the piece ‘Last Laugh’. Learn more about the other prize-winners here. Visit Phil’s website here.
