The organisation

ACAVA is a dynamic arts organisation and educational charity founded almost fifty years ago. We manage a large portfolio of 26 buildings, providing studios for almost 600 artists, mostly in London, but also in Essex and Stoke-on-Trent. ACAVA offers studios, facilities, professional development opportunities, commissions, exhibitions, open studios and a public programme of socially engaged community arts.

ACAVA has been a pioneer of socially engaged and participatory arts programmes since its inception. Today, we deliver a range of activities for communities local to our studios. We work in partnership with many external partners and agencies, including: galleries; schools; HEIs; the NHS; clinical commissioning groups; local authorities; trusts and foundations; and statutory funders such as Arts Council England.

In North Kensington ACAVA has operated from Blechynden St, its purpose-built accessible studios, offices and community art space for over twenty years. Since 2015 we have also provided artist studios and delivered a community programme from Maxilla Studios, in the former Maxilla Children’s Centre building underneath the Westway.  During this time, we have built enduring relationships with the diverse communities in the area, working with local people, community groups, third sector and voluntary organisations. This work includes: Flourish, our flagship programme for children and families; Art for Wellbeing; and the Grenfell Memorial Mosaic, delivered in partnership with Al-Manaar, the Muslim Cultural Centre for North Kensington.

You will be joining the organisation during an exciting period of change as our new CEO implements the delivery of an ambitious new organisational vision. As this evolves in the coming months, it will nurture a culture of mutual support and collaboration and you will be encouraged to bring energy and ideas to this process.

Purpose of role

Maxilla Men’s Shed is a new NHS funded initiative responding to a need expressed by local people, particularly older men, in North Kensington and inspired by the international Men’s Shed movement. This exciting new project management role sits at the heart of the project, around which a community can develop and be empowered, with the core mission of creating a community led, and owned, asset.

The primary aims of Maxilla Men’s Shed are to reduce social isolation and strengthen social support networks for all people, but especially men, in North Kensington. To achieve this, the Programme Manager (Maxilla Men’s Shed) has responsibility for three main areas of delivery:

  • Shed Community (engaging local men, developing and nurturing a community of local users)
  • Shed Programme (day to day coordination and delivery of a programme to train and build knowledge and skills, practical and administrative, within the community of users)
  • Shed Sustainability (in partnership with the shed community, ACAVA programme team and shed steering group, develop and implement a plan for community ownership of the shed and programme)
