Call for artist with experience of working within mental health setting

ACAVA’s long running Artspace Project in partnership with NHS West London Mental Health Trust (WLMHT) is looking for an artist to deliver the project between September and December 2015. Deadline to apply is 21st July 2015.
The role has two main responsibilities, the first to devise and deliver a 10 or 12 week course to a group of up to 6 people at Artspace Level 3 (see attached artists pack for more information), in partnership with a WLMHT occupational therapist, the second is to support a group of up to 6 people at Artspace Level 4 to develop their own art practice.
Sessions run on Tuesday afternoons at Studio 1, Blechynden St, with both groups overlapping in the middle of the afternoon; Level 3 attend from 1:30pm – 3:30pm and Level 4 from 2:30 – 5:00pm. Exact dates TBC, but likely to start in late September and running until mid-December 2015.
We are looking for an ACAVA member with previous experience of working with us on an Artspace project, or for a similar mental health project with another organisation. You must be at ease working within a mental health setting and to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the complex needs Artspace participants may have. An Occupational Therapist is present for all Level 3 activities, so a good level of health professional support is provided, with project management and administration support from ACAVA.
Through consultation with participants the following mediums have been identified as desirable options for next term’s Level 3 group, chosen to develop brush based art skills (this list is not definitive!):
·         Oil Paint
·         Watercolour
·         Brush and Ink
·         Acrylic/ Gouache
·         Egg Tempera
The Level 4 Group will be self-directed in their individual choice of medium for development, so it is important that you have a good basic knowledge (or the confidence to brush up on) of a variety of media including print making techniques, mosaic, drawing (perspective and scale), sculpture (carving and model making).
Attached is our Artspace Artist’s Pack which provides background information on the project as well as a breakdown of the project structure and administration.
To express interest in this opportunity please forward us the following:
·         An up to date C.V. detailing similar projects and your range of experience
·         Up to 6 images to illustrate both your own artistic practice and your community engagement experience
·         A brief (no more than one side of A4) plan detailing how you would deliver the Level 3 project, including information on the techniques you’ll teach and how you will structure the project over the term
·         Contact details of a referee with whom you have delivered a similar project
The artists fee for the project is calculated using ACAVA’s standard freelance artist rate of £31 per hour for 5 hours planning (including meeting at ACAVA) and 5.5 hours per week (1:00pm – 5:30pm) which includes ½ hour to set and ½ hour to pack away and evaluate. The final fee will depend on the number of weeks agreed during planning. There is a materials budget for each project which is managed by ACAVA.
This role requires an enhanced DBS Check, if you do not hold a current certificate a check can be carried via ACAVA for a fee.
Informal interviews will be held in August.
If you would like to discuss the opportunity in more detail please email me on iniven@acava.org and we can plan a time to speak on the phone.
