The Gardens

Three women, three generations, three stories.

Exploring the idea of free will, this evocative film series uses imagery of the natural world as a metaphor for the inner world of three generations of women describing the optimism of youth, the pragmatism of middle age and acceptance of old age.

Emphasising the universal character of the films’ themes, original visual material was obtained from three international archives: the BFI National Archive, the American Library of Congress, and the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive, a combination coincidentally resembling the film-maker’s background.

The Gardens will be exhibited at Clandon Park, one of England’s most outstanding country houses, known for its intimate gardens and views of rolling parkland.

Thee exhibition is funded by the Arts Council England Lottery Fund, the National Trust, the European Cultural Foundation and the Ernest Cook Trust.
