Dust Exhibition at Acava Studios Spode Works

We're happy to announce the next iteration of the Dust exhibition, at the Acava Studios Spode Works at Spode, in Stoke town.

‘Dust’ is a local touring exhibition curated by Joyce Iwaszko (AirSpace Studios) and Andy Cooke (Weather), an exhibition taking inspiration from the Stoke-on-Trent’s City of Culture 2021 bid. The purpose of the exhibition is to inform, inspire, highlight and promote the bid to a wider audience across Stoke-on-Trent.

A collaborative/curatorial exhibition concept derived from a joint fascination of colour, and hope for the future of the Stoke-on-Trent as the City of Culture 2021.Joyce was inspired to create an installation of paintings and ceramics in response to the beautiful use of colour on the promotional artwork for the bid. The installation also references Wedgwood’s Jasperware, creating a dialogue across colour, surface and time. Joyce’s practice is focussed on the exploration of materials such as clay, cement, ceramic pigment (DUST) and paint, with the aim to converge histories and a sense of place.

The launch exhibition was held at the Upstairs Gallery, Piccadily, Hanley and consisted of Andy Cooke’s hand painted typographic signs and beautiful graphic design promotional work for the bid, along with Joyce Iwaszko’s installation of paintings and ceramic pieces (recently shown at AirSpace Gallery). The upcoming exhibitions will include 12 selected artists (this includes Joyce and Andy) who will be asked to respond and take inspiration from of the colours used in the bid and interpret this in their own way. As the bid is promoted through the towns a call for further artists to take part will be announced, with a culminating final exhibition of 20+ artists.
The palette for the design identity for the bid plays a big part in it — conceptually it’s drawn from the garnet and gold of the Staffordshire Hoard (and from the city’s Cultural Quarter brand identity), along with blues and greens inspired by the River Trent itself and Stoke-on-Trent’s Green City status.
